Next Architects, Cirkelpad
The design by the Amsterdam firm of architects Next Architects for a one-hectare parcel of Museumbos literally puts a new perspective on the wood. Its main feature is a wooden path that forms a circle with a diameter of one hundred metres. On one side, the path descends to a depth of three metres below ground level; on the other side, it goes up into the air, supported by a bamboo construction.
When you follow the path, you start at the roots and walk past the branches until you can see over the tree-tops to the horizon – to Almere City, Gooi and Amsterdam. The path presents a cross-section of the wood, with lots of new angles from which to see it. No maintenance will be done in the wood surrounded by the path.
In the short time since it opened, Cirkelbos has already developed from a poplar plantation into quite a diverse wood, with lots of different plants, trees and wildlife. From the Cirkelpad, visitors will be able to witness its further growth from a bird’s eye view down to a ‘worm’s eye’ view.
