Exhibition 12 4

The Dutch Identity? The Power of Now

Opening 6 October 2011 18.00 - 20.00 hrs

In 1993, The Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture (Fonds BKVB) exhibited a selection from its first five years (1988-1992), under the title De Kracht van Heden (The Power of Now). For the exhibition The Dutch Identity? The Power of Now Museum De Paviljoens made a new selection of artists, designers and architects who where among the first to receive a grant for research, new work, travel or exhibitions in the period between 1988 and 1992. This group now belongs to the top of contemporary culture. Museum De Paviljoens paired this selection with a choice from the last five years of the Fonds BKVB.

The talent of these artists, designers and architects has been recognized and stimulated at the beginning of their careers, thanks to the progressive Dutch government policy. The Fonds BKVB is the national body responsible for enabling visual artists, designers, architects and cultural mediators to develop their work in a variety of ways, and as such plays an important role within the present Dutch cultural infrastructure. This tightly woven network provides in opportunities for new talents, the development and further education of these talents and it enables both artists and designers to make new work as well as to show it. From January 2013 on, this infrastructure will be changed drastically, because of severe cuts and ideological changes in policy by the current Dutch government.

The autonomously operating Fonds BKVB is known for recognizing and supporting talent in an early stage. Numerous artists, designers and architects from the first group to receive the grants (1988-1992) by now have developed a flourishing cultural practice. Since the 1950’s, the stimulating cultural policy has been a distinctive part of Dutch politics. It created a wealth of possibilities for innovative Dutch culture to be shared with its contemporaries. From that time on, new developments in art and reflection on society were not solely accesible for the elite any longer.

The group of artists, designers and architects that have been supported by the Fonds BKVB between 1988 and 2011, will undoubtedly make their mark both in the Netherlands and across the borders for at least the coming 20 years. For a new generation the conditions are different. How will the cultural infrastructure function in 2013 for unknown talent in the Netherlands? Who can reach the top in 2041 or 2051? How can we keep the power of the present of today in our society?
