How do you generate urbanity?

The exhibition De Stedelijke Conditie / The Urban Condition investigates wich elements are needed to generate urbanity. What makes a city urban? De Stedelijke Conditie / The Urban Condition concentrates on elements of the urban landscape like suburbs, parks, shopping malls and recreational zones and studies the way people handle the phenomenom city.

Artists and designers were invited to imagine, question and comment on the urban environment: they reflect on the urban space. What is it that makes a city urban? De stedelijke conditie / The Urban Condition will show work by Lonnie van Brummelen, Siebren de Haan, Manuel Graf, Jonas Dahlberg, Jakob Kolding, Gabriel Lester, Michal Moravčík, Ira Koers, Rebecca Sakoun, Lucia Nimcová, Sabine Bitter & Helmut Weber and Niels Schrader, Tanja Keilen, Bik Van der Pol, Carsten Höller, Marin Kasimir and Joes Koppers & Susann Lekas.

Various works of De Stedelijke Conditie / The Urban Condition have been specially developed for Museum De Paviljoens, such as the monumental installation Cross Section by Gabriel Lester. Another example is the work of designer Niels Schrader, who has transposed the acoustic environment in seven locations in Almere into abstract black-and-white images. These images will be visible in the city in the form of posters. The Swedish artist Jonas Dahlberg will show, for the first time in the Netherlands, his Invisible Cities, consisting of a film projection and an installation of a ‘wallpaper’ with 14,000 names of cities.

The opening of the exhibition will take place on Saturday 1 April 2006 from 17:00 to 19:00. Introduction by Brans Stassen, town planner, who was involved in the building of Almere from 1972 until 2002.
