It’s Unfair!

16 Nov 2002-2 Mar 2003

In 1992 and 1993, Cologne gallery owners Tanja Grunert, Michael Jansen and Christian Nagel, perturbed by the state of affairs surrounding Cologne’s traditional art fair, organised an ‘anti-fair’ – the Unfair – dubbed ‘the real art fair’.

In their view, the traditional Art Cologne was only concerned with art as a tradable or collectible commodity. Strikingly, ten years after that Unfair, the galleries and artists they exhibited are leading the way. Artists such as Aernout Mik, Damien Hirst, Jason Rhoades, Barbara Visser and Carsten Höller are indispensable features on the current exhibition circuit. This exhibition comprised over 100 important pieces, from museums and private collections, by the Dutch and foreign artists who were exhibited at Unfair in 1992 and 1993 and/or were of that period.

The following artists worked on It's Unfair: Henry Bond, Angela Bulloch, John Currin, Tracey Emin, Anya Gallaccio, Liam Gillick, Lothar Hempel, Damien Hirst, Carsten Höller, Lidy Jacobs, Michael Joo, Karen Kilimnik, Renee Kool, Daniëlle Kwaaitaal, Inez van Lamsweerde, Sean Landers, Klaar van der Lippe, Raymond von Luckwald, Aernout Mik, Raymond Pettibon, Jack Pierson, Paul de Reus, Jason Rhoades, Julie Roberts, Allan Ruppersberg, Lily van der Stokker, Berend Strik, Wolfgang Tillmans, Gavin Turk, Barbara Visser and C.A. Wertheim.
