Nico van Dam
Art ambassador
This week art ambassador Nico van Dam, personnel and career advisor for the Municipality of Almere, talks about the Kompaktes Kommunehaus by Carsten Höller in the main reception room of the town hall.
A beautiful ideal for the town hall
“The Kompaktes Kommunehaus is a wonderful thing. It has been beautifully made, a true example of craftsmanship. Everything is transparent, including the bolts, and light passes through it so beautifully …”
"The main reception room is a very fitting environment; not only because it is such a gorgeous space, but also because of the ideas behind the work. It is filled with so much idealism! The ‘Kommunehaus’ is a house for the community. It is transparent, therefore nothing is hidden. Ideally, the town hall is a place for the community as well. With this work Höller refers to the Russian architect G.T. Krutikov, who designed an ideal city in 1928. This thinking about the ideal city fits perfectly in the town hall.”
”Everyone can climb the staircase, which is a bit of a climb. There I am, in my neat suit, whereas I would really like to have shorts on so I can climb better!”
