Anne Mieke Backer - Monument voor een woningwetwoning (1981 - 1992)

This week Rinus Hofs talks about Monument voor een woningwetwoning (Monument for a council house) by Anne Mieke Backer. The work is situated at the new sheepfold in Almere Haven.

“I became the art ambassador for this work because I feel very involved with it. Monument voor een woningwetwoning (Monument for a council house) represents the plan for a council house, made from buxus shrubs. The work first stood with two other ‘living houses’ on an island in the Leeghwaterplas. There, the houses were not kept up and entirely neglected. I felt something for these works and thought it was a real shame that they were like this. In addition, I had small children at the time and they found it great fun to play in that ‘labyrinth’.

Along with other people we thought it a great idea to support this artwork and return it to its former glory in Almere Haven. That’s why we have set up an association for the preservation of the living house. Since 1991, we attend to the Monument voor een woningwetwoning (Monument for a council house). Twice a year we work on the house for one morning. We prune the house back into shape.

I have a 'green' background, work with green, am a wholesale dealer in green. Green and culture, that appeals to me. I love to give or get a guided tour about nature. And culture goes with it, in my opinion. It is something to think about. And I am a real Flevoland resident as well, I love the polder."

Museum De Paviljoens will gladly offer you more information about this artwork and other works from De Collectie Almere via or 036-5450400.
