Sjoerd Buisman - Souvenirs van het Oude Land (1999)

This week art ambassador Martina Meesters, nature guide for the IVN, talks about Souvenirs van het Oude Land (Souvenirs from the Old Land) by Sjoerd Buisman.

“I love nature and I have been interested in art for a long time. During a bike excursion I stumbled upon the Souvenirs van het Oude Land (Souvenirs from the Old Land) at the Meerveld in Almere Haven. Sjoerd Buisman, the artist, has made bronze casts from old, thick tree trunks from fully-grown forests in the old land. He has placed these between the young trees in the grass. I love it! I really miss that a lot in the new polder landscape, those really thick trees. With this work, the artist has taken something from nature and put it back in nature as art. Art and nature come together here: this is really a perfect artwork for me.

I organise bike excursions along special trees in the city and then I always pay attention to the artwork that we encounter as well. I indicate extraordinary things to the participants which they might pass by otherwise - trees and artwork. Of course we also take pause - literally and figuratively – at the Souvenirs van het Oude Land (Souvenirs from the Old Land)!"

Museum De Paviljoens will gladly offer you more information about this artwork and other works from De Collectie Almere via , 036-5450400.
