A fist of fury - bricks in space (fuck it there is a war going on and we are in it on the wrong side) (2007), Dutch memory, Baghdad Beograd (2007)

Gilbert van Drunen: “I, insofar as I can speak for myself, being made up of approximately 2000 quotations from famous philosophers, actors, writers, poets, cyclists, I think - bearing in mind the eventuality of that ‘magical’, non-thinking moment of truly understanding things, like the ability to merely see porcelain as the bearer of history in itself, as the skillful doubt - that, alongside understanding as the outcome of thinking, alongside knowing that the process of thinking is merely the result of a chemical reaction between water, phosphorus and salt, alongside the ability of being in love, art is the only way to be the real Oedipal Ouroboros, to be the real motherfucker.”

“Knowing that Baghdad and Beograd were the last cities bombed by Dutch F-16’s, it’s unbearable to see the collective memory rapidly fade away, it didn’t even take a generation to evaporate. Beograd is one of the most internationalist cities I ever visited. Try to find someone speaking English in the streets of Budapest, Zagreb or even Prague ten years ago – only students could, in Beograd almost everybody understood what I said (not what I meant). Baghdad is the city were civilisation started… you just don’t bomb cities you don’t understand.”

“A fist of fury – bricks in space, fuck it – there is a war going on – and we are in it – on the wrong side refers to the 9-11 happening, which could also be seen as an act of resistance, bricks through the air on a higher level, and we – the brave Dutch – followed the Bush administration without a single moment of doubt. The line ‘fuck it – etcetera’ came up when I heard a Dutch gallery owner say that Muslims don’t like music and arts in general – as an answer to my question about the destroyed violins called ‘Islamic violins’, made by an artist with an Arabic name ‘ he’s from Jemen and no… he is a Christian. Let’s tell it in porcelain because nothing ever changes.”

De Nederlandse identiteit? Half suiker, half zand.
